Your PIR is the rate of tax that we must deduct from the taxable income added to your savings. PIR rates can be 10.5%, 17.5% or 28%.
For the year starting 1 April 2013 if you are a New Zealand tax resident your PIR will be 28% unless one of the following applies:
If you earned less than $14,000 in any one of the last two years and the sum of your total taxable income and your total PIE income for the year was below $48,000, your PIR will be 10.5%.
If the 10.5% rate does not apply and you earned more than $14,000 but less than $48,000 in any one of the last two years and the sum of your total taxable income and your total PIE income for the year was below $70,000, your PIR will be 17.5%.
If you are an overseas tax resident, your PIR will be 28%.
The PIR tax rate that you tell us will apply, subject to legislation, for future years until you tell us to change it.
